Introduction
In 2017 my father was diagnosed with mesothelioma, an aggressive and deadly form of cancer. The day after he informed us of his diagnosis I sat at the piano and began to write. It was my attempt to process my grief and to express to my father what he meant to me in the only way I knew how. Six months later he passed away. This was the last music he ever listened to.
These short pieces are meditations of sorts, intended to be repeated ad lib, as many times as the performer deems appropriate. They may be played in any order and fragments may be repeated or omitted provided the Chorale and Fragment IX remain in place.
There is no specific program for the individual fragments in this work and it is not my intention to invoke in the listener a feeling of sorrow. This music is a farewell to my father whom I will always miss and my hope is that it leaves the listener with a sense of calmness and presence of mind.
